There is much on offer to learn from the public artworks of the town. These vary from current political views to Richmond and Australia's history. We can learn what the majority of artist think about the area and it shows a fair estimation of how the up and coming street artists feel.
Take these questions for example:
1. Can the works of art be categorised in any way? If so, how?
Yes they can. There is a clear distinction between the types of public art and graffiti. There is unsanctioned, unauthorised works that can be categorised as tags and artworks; which can be broken up into sculpture, spray ups and past ups, and authorised art that can be split into sculpture, spray ups, instillations and murals.
2. What do you feel was the purpose for creating each of these works of public art?
They give examples and visual displays of ideas and morals. Political views are displayed in a majority works. These works display opinions that otherwise wouldn’t be shown. This can help people in their own opinions and shape their ideas and morals in a positive direction. Some display important information about the area that would not be displayed in public or official archives. They sometimes display historical information and information about people. Some works are tributes to people who have recently died.
3. Is the history or culture of Richmond portrayed in any of its public art?
Yes. This is especially show in the mural of Dimmeys. Some other murals scattered around Richmond display this also, but the 67 metre Dimmeys mural is the best example in town.
4. What are the pros and cons of people creating art in places like Richmond?
The pros of the production of public art they decorate the walls, they display opinions that otherwise wouldn’t be shown and they shape the direction of the up and coming art within the area. The cons are some people don’t like and appreciate the works (some consider it as graffiti) and some people do not produce real public art, they just tag and write inappropriate things.
